Stolen stokvel cash tears Alexandra family apart

By Everson Luhanga

  • Six Alexandra women say more than R80 000 disappeared from their stokvel account after Ella Sepuru put the savings into her daughter Tshegofatso Wendy Sepuru’s account.
  • Tshegofatso Wendy Sepuru told people online she was safe, but gave no clear reason for the missing money after sharing a bank balance of R76 600.

Six women in Alexandra spent the whole year putting money aside for their stokvel. They planned to share it in November.

But when the big day came, the money was gone. The group had trusted Ella Sepuru to keep their savings safe.

Ella put the money into her daughter Tshegofatso Wendy Sepuru’s account.

When the women met last week, Wendy did not arrive.

The R80 000 was also missing. Ella said Wendy moved out of her rented place in Tsutsumani without her two children, who are ten and seven.

Ella said she is very disappointed.

Worried about her daughter, Ella asked Scrolla.Africa to post a missing person alert. Soon after the alert went up, Wendy replied in the comments.

She said she was fine and asked people to stop sharing the post.

One of the stokvel members told the publication that the missing money left the group in tears.

She said they went hungry during the year so they could save.

She also said Ella should not have put their savings into Wendy’s account without telling them.

When asked why she took the money, Wendy denied it.

She told her mother she was going to visit a friend in Roodepoort.

Later she said she was in Johannesburg but refused to give her location.

During the chat, Wendy sent a screenshot showing a bank balance of R76 600 in August.

When asked about it, she said she got the money from somewhere but did not explain further. Wendy also said she is not working.
