- A 50-year-old stepfather who raped his 11-year-old stepdaughter three times while her mother was away has been given three life sentences.
- He threatened the child to keep quiet, denied the charges in court, and showed no regret even after being found guilty of the crimes.
A 50-year old man convicted of raping his 11-year-old stepdaughter three times will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
The Pretoria Magistrates’ Court on Thursday sentenced the convicted rapist man to three life terms, to be served at the same time.
The court also banned him from owning guns and put his name on the list of sex offenders.
The rape incidents happened between 2018 and 2020 while the man was in a relationship with the child’s mother. Two attacks took place at his home in Olievenhoutbosch.
The first rape happened in October 2018 when the mother was in hospital giving birth. The second was in July 2020 when he came home drunk while his mother was away visiting family.
He threatened the child not to tell anyone saying they would end up homeless and hungry if she did expose his deeds.
The third rape happened after the mother had ended the relationship with him, but had left the children in his care while visiting family in Lenz.
The crimes only came to light when the mother noticed something wrong while her daughter was bathing. After questioning the child, she went straight to the police.
The man denied everything in court, but prosecutor Advocate Emile van der Merwe proved he was guilty.
Presiding Magistrate Ntlati said the man showed no remorse for raping a child “who called him papa”.
NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said this sentence shows they are serious about fighting crimes against women and children.
