Stellenbosch football fan Eon Hendrikse was left with a badly injured face and needed stitches after he was allegedly attacked by two Stellenbosch players, Iqraam Rayners and Jayden Adams.

Hendrikse was excited to meet the players at the Centraal Club in Stellenbosch, Western Cape.

“I was out with friends when I bumped into Iqraam Rayners in the bathroom. I was so happy to see a player I loved, and I spoke to him in a friendly way,” he said.

“I said we wouldn’t like it if he moved to Mamelodi Sundowns because the people of Stellenbosch love him so much.”

However, according to Hendrikse, Rayners, who seemed to be drunk, became aggressive as they left the bathroom.

“I asked him to calm down and asked if he knew me since I am well known in my community. The next moment, I was hit with a glass and I felt blood running down my face,” Hendrikse said.

He said while Rayners and another player, Jayden Adams, continued to kick him, bouncers helped him.

“I was taken to Stellenbosch hospital where I got about 20 to 25 stitches under my eye, along my nose, and in my head,” said Hendrikse.

“I didn’t mean any harm. I was just excited about our player. I was trying to start a conversation with him.”

Liam Bekker, Stellenbosch FC’s media officer, said the club became aware of the alleged incident involving two players over the weekend.

“While this incident did not happen during the club’s activities, we are taking the allegations very seriously, and an internal investigation is underway to find out the facts,” said Bekker.

Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie confirmed that Stellenbosch SAPS has opened a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

“No arrests have been made yet. The investigation is ongoing,” said Pojie.

Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi confirmed the coming arrival of Rayners on Monday morning.

The 28-year-old Bafana Bafana international scored 15 league goals last season.
