- More than 300 Tshwane bus passengers were affected after two buses were damaged during Spring Day celebrations on Tuesday.
- Tshwane Bus Service says many of those left without transport were pupils and students who rely on the buses daily.
More than 300 Tshwane bus passengers were left without transport this week, after two buses were damaged during Spring Day celebrations on Tuesday, 1 September.
Tshwane Bus Service said the buses were taken out of service following incidents of vandalism during the celebrations. Videos shared by the service showed people crowding around a bus, with some climbing onto the roof to dance, while a broken window was later visible on the vehicle.
In a separate clip, a group of young people was seen forcing a bus door open and pouring water inside, drenching the driver’s seat and forcing the driver to leave the bus, delaying the route.
“Our kids and community went overboard and damaged assets that serve them, leaving over 300 passengers today without bus transportation, of which many are pupils and students,” the bus service said.
Spring Day water fights are an annual tradition across parts of Gauteng, marking the first of September with buckets, hosepipes and water balloons aimed at passers-by, cars, taxis and buses.
This year’s celebrations were widely shared on social media, sparking mixed reactions, with some defending it as a long-standing community tradition and others saying it had gone too far.
