Security cameras captured the shocking moment of a Spar employee snatching a baby girl from a trolley the second its mother turned her back.

Daniella Wolff turned her back to her eight-month-old child for less than 10 seconds to reach for something in the freezer.

When her back is turned, the butchery assistant at the Meyersdal branch in Alberton seizes his moment and lifts the child out of its trolley.

Panic sets in when the mother turns around to find her baby girl missing, and she desperately searches around for her.

Suddenly she spots the employee, still in view of the camera, and rushes over to him, prizing the child out of his arms.

“Where were you taking her? What were you going to do with her?” Daniella, who posted an account of the shocking ordeal on Facebook, said she asked the man.

“He is smiling and laughing and I say it isn’t a joke and it’s not amusing,” she continues.

“He tells me he walked past the trolley and my daughter’s arms were up so he picked her up. I am frozen and confused.”

Daniella says she called her husband Bradley, who rushed over to the store. After reviewing the security footage, the couple insisted on reporting a case of attempted baby snatching.

Police were called and arrested the member of staff. A spokesperson for the Spar Group told the Daily Mail, “We are extremely relieved a reported case of baby snatching was foiled on Sunday and we can confirm we immediately decided to suspend one member of staff.” Video source: Youtube
