- South Africa’s government is telling its citizens in the Middle East to get out now, as heavy attacks are expected to keep happening.
- South Africans back home must not travel to the Middle East at all, as the government says things are going to get worse.
South Africans who are in the Middle East and do not need to be there must leave now. The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) says things in the region are getting worse and wants people out as soon as possible.
More than 6,400 South Africans had already logged onto the Travel Smart system by 4 March 2026. Dirco says that number is going up fast.
People who want to leave can use the official evacuation channels on the department’s website. Dirco says register now so you are ready to go when a safe way out opens up.
Some airlines have started flying out of the region again, though flights are limited. Dirco says people must use this chance while it is there.
“Your safety is our paramount concern,” the department said.
Anyone who needs urgent help from an embassy or consulate must contact Dirco through its official channels right away.
South Africans in the affected areas must also sign up with the nearest South African Embassy or Consulate. Keep checking government platforms for updates.
If you are back home in South Africa and thinking about going to the Middle East, do not go. Dirco says conditions are going to get worse, not better.
South Africa also called on everyone involved in the conflict to hold back and follow international law, international humanitarian law and the rules of the United Nations Charter.
For help or to find contact details for South African missions in the region, call Dirco on 012 351 1000 or visit www.dirco.gov.za.
