- Muhammad Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha’s 91-run stand rescued Pakistan after a shaky start in the first ODI in Faisalabad.
- Shaheen Afridi sealed victory with a six, giving Pakistan a two-wicket win as South Africa’s middle-order collapse cost them.
Pakistan held their nerve to beat South Africa by two wickets in the first one-day international at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad.
The home side’s victory came after a dramatic chase of 264, which began badly with three early wickets for just 18 runs. Among the early casualties was captain Babar Azam, who was dismissed for seven.
Muhammad Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha then steadied Pakistan’s innings with a 91-run partnership that turned the game around. Rizwan hit six boundaries in his 55 off 74 balls, while Agha provided solid support at the other end.
Despite losing wickets late in the innings, Pakistan managed to cross the line with two balls to spare. Captain Shaheen Afridi smashed a six to finish the job and spark celebrations among the home fans.
Earlier, South Africa’s openers Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Quinton de Kock laid a strong foundation with 57 and 63 respectively. But their middle order failed to capitalise, losing wickets in quick succession before being bowled out for 263 in 49.1 overs.
Spinner Bjorn Fortuin was South Africa’s standout bowler, giving away only 38 runs in his 10 overs.
The win gives Pakistan a 1–0 lead in the three-match series, with the next two games to be played at the same venue on Thursday and Saturday.
