Son Heung-min, the captain of Tottenham Hotspur and the South Korean national team, suffered an injury to his finger during a fight with teammates before South Korea’s defeat in the Asian Cup semi-finals.
The incident happened at a team dinner ahead of their match against Jordan on 6 February, which ended in a 2-0 loss for South Korea, adding to their long wait for another Asian Cup title since their win 64 years ago.
The disagreement began when younger players decided to play table tennis, leading to a fight with Son and other senior team members.
“The players exchanged a few words and Son hurt his finger in the process,” explained an official from the South Korean Football Federation.
Following the incident, Lee Kang-in of Paris Saint-Germain shared his apologies on Instagram.
Head coach Jürgen Klinsmann took responsibility for the defeat and has since been fired.
Son returned to Tottenham’s lineup against Brighton in the Premier League on 10 February, playing with his injured fingers bandaged. He contributed to Tottenham’s 2-1 victory with a crucial assist in the final moments of the match.
