Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos is angry with fans who have criticised star man Percy Tau on social media.

The 30-year-old Al Ahly player has faced a storm of negative comments from South African football fans on social media after failing to make an impact in Bafana’s recent games.

Calls to drop the star player have been trending after Bafana’s 1-1 draw with Nigeria left them in fourth place in their 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifying group.

After a win, a loss, and a defeat thus far in qualifying, Broos’ team hopes for a win against Zimbabwe on Tuesday.

The manager urged fans to stop putting pressure on his star man.

“I think that everybody puts too much weight on the shoulders of Percy … you can’t make Percy the player who decides the game,” Broos told reporters ahead of the clash.

“He’s a very good player. There is no doubt about it, but everybody thinks Percy will give us victory in every game. I was happy with him in the game against Nigeria. We replaced him because he was exhausted. Also, in the performances at Afcon, he did his job.”

The manager added that he hoped the support from the players and staff would restore Tau’s confidence after the “disgusting” social media trolling.

“It’s not so easy when they kill you on social media. It’s the worst thing in the world. You can say what you want about somebody, but it’s disgusting sometimes. I hope what he feels from the group and the technical team will be enough.”
