Tembisa-born artist Stephen Shongwe, better known as SMezi, is ready to release his 8th studio album, The Love of Na Zulu, and it promises something for everyone.
The 32-year-old singer says the album blends Amapiano, Afro pop and Gospel, and is made to help people going through hard times.
“I sing about people’s problems and I also give them solutions,” he said. “This is not just music, it’s medicine.”
SMezi has already released several singles this year, including Kgole, Owakho, and Wena Wedwa featuring Alina and H Flow. These tracks are already playing on major radio stations.
His latest single, Baba Ngiyabonga, features up-and-coming artists Great Dail and Critical Saucey.
He has also been nominated for a Gazata National Music Award.
But his success didn’t come overnight. SMezi started out singing while cleaning the house. It was only after someone named Mzayoni heard him sing and took him to a studio that he began his music career.
Now, as the founder of Stebie Records, he wears many hats: artist, producer, and employer. “It’s not easy,” he said. “Every cent I make, I use to pay my workers.”
He credits his growth to the support of his close team, especially producers H Flow and Deepza, his business partner Mam Stebie, and his long-time partner Palisa Setona, who also helps write his songs.
The album is expected to drop before the end of the month.
