- Police discovered the partially burnt body of a woman in Kwa-Thema on Tuesday morning near the Blesbokspruit River in Springs.
- Detectives are already investigating the deaths of five women found around Kempton Park.
Fears are growing in Ekurhuleni after police found a sixth woman dead on Tuesday morning.
Officers discovered the woman’s body near Moshoeshoe Street and the Blesbokspruit River in Kwa-Thema, Springs. Local reports say she was naked and partially burnt.
Police at the scene believe she was between 25 and 30 years old. The fire damage has made it hard to identify her.
Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the area is an active crime scene.
This discovery comes just 45km away from Kempton Park, where police have found five other women dead over the last two months. On Monday, officers found the fifth body in Olifantsfontein.
Deputy National Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Tebello Mosikili said four of the five Kempton Park victims were sexually assaulted. She said one body was too decomposed to tell yet.
“We know that they were all sexually molested, or at least the majority of them,” Mosikili said.
The Kempton Park victims were found partially clothed with visible bruises. They were dumped in open spaces, including roadsides, veld and behind buildings.
Police have identified one of the women as 38-year-old Elizabeth Moselakgomo. The runner disappeared last week after leaving home for a run.
Her family identified her body on Monday. She leaves behind an eight-year-old daughter.
Two of the five Kempton Park women are still unidentified.
Police have put together a special team of detectives and psychology experts to investigate the Kempton Park cases.
They have not confirmed if a serial killer is operating or if the Kwa-Thema death is connected.
