The battle rages on. In the struggle between the cops and the gangs, KwaZulu-Natal police shot and killed six suspects in two separate shootouts on Thursday.

KZN Provincial Police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker said six suspects were shot and fatally wounded with five firearms being recovered in two separate incidents.

Brigadier Naicker said in the one incident four men who were suspected to be behind a string of cash-in-transit robberies in KZN were shot and fatally wounded.

“A team of police officers from various units including the Hawks gathered intelligence regarding the whereabouts of the suspects and on Thursday went to the identified house in Camperdown in the early hours of the morning,” said Brigadier Naicker.

“When police announced their arrival they were greeted with a hail of bullets from the suspects.”

Brigadier Naicker said police officers returned fire and during the shootout, four suspects sustained fatal gunshot wounds.

He said in another incident, police officers of the National Intervention Unit used intelligence and cornered two suspects who were sought for intimidation, extortion and other violent crimes.

“When police pounced on the suspects at their hideout at the Klaarwater Hostel in Mariannhill, the suspects opened fire at the police. Two suspects were shot and fatally wounded in the shootout. Two firearms were found in the possession of the suspects,” he said.

He said police in KZN remain committed to enforcing and upholding the law by preventing, combatting and investigating crime.

“Suspects who challenge the authority of the state by shooting at police officers will be met with a force that matches their actions,” he said.
