Police have confirmed that a group of suspected cash-in-transit criminals were shot and killed in a shootout with the police in Germiston on Saturday morning.

Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale confirmed that six suspects were killed. An AK-47 rifle, four handguns, and the cash trolley were recovered. The vehicle that the suspects were using has been identified as stolen in Brooklyn.

She said information was received regarding a cross-pavement robbery that was going to take place in the Germiston area.

Colonel Mogale said an integrated, multi-disciplinary team was deployed to the area. “As the members approached the area, a lookout was received for an armed robbery at Top Bets, where G4S was robbed, and the lookout was for an IX35,” she said.

Members started looking for the suspects’ vehicle and spotted it driving recklessly. Members attempted to stop the suspects, but they immediately started shooting at the officers.

Members returned fire, and the suspects’ vehicle lost control, crashing into a pole.

In yet another shootout between the police and suspected criminals, two suspects were shot and killed in Brackendowns, south of Johannesburg.

Colonel Mogale said when the suspects realised that they were being followed by the police, they started firing at the officials. “A shootout ensued when police returned fire. Two suspects, who were driving a vehicle affixed with false registration plates, were killed.”

Police recovered two unlicensed firearms, a rifle and a handgun, ammunition for both firearms, cellphones, and gloves.
