Madlala residents in Lamontville, Durban have destroyed six vehicles and a Sizakala Centre.

  • The attack happened during a service delivery strike in the early hours of Monday
  • The Ethekwini municipality said the informal settlement residents also torched the building, which is connected to SASSA offices and a clinic
  • The residents were demanding electricity infrastructure after a local transformer burst because of illegal connections

The mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda, said the burning down of government property is “treason”.

“This is anarchy. How do you demand electricity and destroy state property that is of help to the community?”, Kaunda said, adding: “The city is plagued with land invasions and that is a recipe for illegal electricity and water connections.”
