A Shoprite customer in Cape Town is upset with the supermarket chain after she was injured in April at the Mitchell’s Plain branch.
The woman slipped on a wet floor near the bakery and said there was no sign warning about the hazard.
“I told the store manager and later went to the hospital. The doctors said I didn’t break any bones, but my ankle and leg have been swollen ever since, and it hasn’t healed,” she said.
Before her injury, the woman sold vetkoek to make a living, but now she can’t work because of her injury.
She is also frustrated with Shoprite’s response. Instead of helping her directly, she said, they gave her the contact information for the company they hired to clean the store.
“That was wrong. I was hurt in their store, so they should have handled it, but the numbers they gave me didn’t work, and I got no response to my emails,” she said.
The woman returned to Shoprite to ask for help but said they told her to keep trying the cleaning company’s phone numbers and email.
“All I want is for them to take responsibility. I need money to see a specialist because my leg isn’t healing, but I can’t afford it. Shoprite is playing games while I suffer,” she said.
The customer believes Shoprite should have dealt with the cleaning company directly and feels abandoned by the store.
Shoprite’s media team responded that their insurance brokers handle claims for people injured in their stores.
“The customer has been contacted to ensure the necessary assistance is provided and the matter resolved,” the supermarket chain said.
