Residents of Brown’s Farm in Philippi, Cape Town, were left in shock after the body of an off-duty police officer with his hands and feet tied was found on Tuesday.
Nolukholo Qamndana, a 45-year-old resident, was going to a shop when she overheard a group talking about the incident.
“I went to the scene to see for myself because I couldn’t believe it,” she said. “What happened is bad, and I don’t think he was murdered where he was found. I think he was murdered somewhere and dumped in that area.”
Qamndana said the slain officer stayed in the same township.
A resident, speaking anonymously, said officers are not supposed to live in the same townships as the residents where they work.
“I think the only thing that will save officers from being attacked and killed is when they are moved away from us residents. Some are followed and killed for the cases they are involved in or by the people they have arrested,” she said.
“The incident has shocked us because police officers are supposed to be respected as their job is to protect us.”
Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said the victim was an off-duty officer stationed at Athlone SAPS.
