Musician Shebeshxt faces even deeper trouble as prosecutors add six older charges to his attempted murder case.
His lawyer, Lot Ramusi, says he never saw it coming and now has to rush to prepare before the court date in Polokwane on Thursday.
Ramusi says he was caught off guard when the state suddenly added the new charges.
“I was not aware of the previous charges and their merit. I still need to consult with Chauke to get clarity,” he said.
He says he now needs time to study the charges to see how strong the case is.
But for him, getting bail for Shebeshxt, whose real name is Lehlogonolo Chauke, is the most urgent task.
Ramusi says staying in jail will hit the musician hard.
“He has a lot to lose if he doesn’t get bail. As you might know, he is one of the most fully booked artists for performances throughout the festive season,” he said.
The six charges include three counts of attempted murder, illegal possession of firearm, malicious damage to property and robbery with intent to cause bodily harm.
Ramusi calls the move an “ambush” and says he will go through each charge before taking a final view.
The latest attempted murder charge links to a shooting in Ladanna, outside Polokwane, on 19 October.
Police say the suspect fired several shots at another car after an argument.
The 34-year-old victim was badly hurt and taken to hospital.
The case was first handled by Westernburg police.
It is now with the Provincial Investigation Unit, which has issued a new arrest warrant and seized two of Shebeshxt’s cars for tests.
