PICK OF THE SPORT: Dylan Bettencourt recommends watching the Sharks try to book their spot in the Challenge Cup final.
If the Sharks can manage to beat Clermont Auvergne in their Challenge Cup semi-final at Twickenham Stoop on Saturday, it will go a long way towards restoring the faith of their loyal fans. Their performance in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship (VURC) has been nothing short of pathetic. They no longer have a chance in that competition, but can still win some silverware in the Challenge Cup. But it will be close – and if they lose they’re out of it altogether. This is their last chance.
The Sharks match is at 1.30pm on Saturday on DStv channel 201.
➤ The Blitzbokke could not have started their Singapore HSBC Sevens campaign any better. While they beat Spain in the previous tournament in Hong Kong, this time around, they took no prisoners, beating Spain by five tries to one. Their next match is later today against Samoa, and tomorrow morning, they play the high-flying France. Coach Philip Snyman is on the verge of calling his new position a success. If they can win tomorrow, he and the team can hold their heads high.
The Women’s Sevens team started their Singapore effort with a brave win over the USA. As always, Nadine Roos was the shining star, with a try and two conversions. They have since lost to France by 49-0, conceding seven tries, but then France is in devastating form. Early tomorrow, they play Japan, and they could be heading for a second pool win, which would take them into the finals.
The Singapore Sevens is on DStv channels 201 and 211 throughout the weekend.
➤ With just over two weeks to go in the Premier League season, teams like Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool can almost imagine the title in their hands.
With no room for error, top-of-the-table Arsenal hosts Bournemouth on Saturday at 1.30pm with the hopes of keeping their position as league leaders, at least for the time being.
Manchester City, having seen the result of the Arsenal game, will know how to keep the pressure on the Gunners when they take to the field against Wolves at 6.30pm on the same day.
Liverpool, whose fans may feel they are out of the title race, might still have a chance if both Arsenal and City lose.
The Reds need to keep winning to stand any chance, and it will not be easy when they take on Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday at 5.30pm.
There is so much at stake, and every game for these three teams is crucial. All games will be live on DStv channel 203.
