Peter Shalulile struck late on to help Mamelodi Sundowns beat stubborn Royal AM 1-0 in a Premier Soccer League match at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.

The Namibian struck with five minutes remaining as Sundowns stole maximum points on a difficult evening for them.

They are now on 66 points, six away from surpassing the 71-point mark attained during the 2015/16 season.

After Saturday’s result, Royal AM remain 14th on the standings as Sundowns are still unbeaten in this campaign.

Sundowns coach Rhulani Mokena fielded what was an almost second-string team with the likes of Shalulile, Khuliso Mudau and Aubrey Modiba among the few notable regulars.

The visitors from KwaZulu-Natal had familiar faces like goalkeeper Hugo Nyame, Thabo Matlaba, Kabelo Mahlasela and Menzi Masuku in their line-up.

Thanks to Royal AM’s spirited defending, Sipho Mbule was denied eight minutes into the match while and Modiba got close in the first half.

Modiba was back four minutes into the second half but drew a good save from Nyame.

Matias Esquivel and Neo Maema then got close with Cyril Lingwati and Sikhethele Mabuza were unyielding at the back.

Just as the match seemed headed for a goalless draw, Shalulile grabbed the all-important goal.

The 30-year-old connected with a cross from Lesiba Nku to separate the two slides.

Sundowns managed to hold on to their slim lead until the end as Royal AM showed little chance of hitting back.

The Brazilians now prepare to visit Royal AM at Harry Gwala next Tuesday as the two sides meet again.
