- Gunmen killed seven people and wounded three others in a night attack on Basotho residents.
- Attackers torched vehicles and buildings after the shooting; now police hunt for the killers.
Heavily armed men speaking isiZulu shot and killed seven people, including a sleeping woman, in a brutal attack at Soul City informal settlement in Kagiso on Sunday night.
The killers pulled up in a BMW and Polo Vivo outside a shack in the West Rand settlement and opened fire on the people inside.
Six Basotho men died while a woman was killed by a stray bullet in her sleep.
Three other people were shot and wounded, while the attackers torched four cars, a spaza shop and a shack.
“The motive of the attack is unknown at this stage and no one has been arrested,” Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi told Scrolla.Africa.
A source at the scene said police found 30 expanded rifle cartridges, 11 pistol cartridges and live ammunition.
“All victims had multiple gunshot wounds to their bodies and heads. They were declared dead on the scene,” he said.
Only two victims could be identified: 23-year-old Matshediso Potsanyane and Motsamai Thabane, who was about 50 years old.
Two wounded survivors are in stable condition at Leratong Hospital.
Firefighters managed to stop the flames from spreading to other shacks after the attackers set four vehicles alight. The spaza shop owner and the people in the burned shack escaped unhurt.
Police want anyone with information about the attack to contact their nearest police station or the Crime Stop Line at 08600 10111.
