Bongani Ntanzi, one of the men accused in the 2014 murder of Senzo Meyiwa, claimed that he was offered R3-million to falsely implicate unnamed individuals in the murder case.
This claim came as part of his lawyer’s statement during the trial at the Gauteng High Court on Thursday.
Ntanzi’s attorney said that his client was forced into signing a pre-written confession. This confession, according to Ntanzi, was presented to him by Brigadier Bongani Gininda, the lead investigator on the case.
The defence argued that certain pages of this confession document were stamped but left blank.
Brigadier Gininda denied these allegations. He denied the claim of offering money for a false confession, emphasising the lack of funds and reasoning for such an offer.
Gininda maintained that Ntanzi voluntarily confessed without any external pressure or incentive. The confession in question was reportedly made on 19 June 2020.
While Gininda didn’t mention Meyiwa’s girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo, he had previously implicated her in the murder, suggesting that the killing was a hit rather than a robbery gone wrong.
Ntanzi, along with Muzi Sibiya, Mthobisi Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa, and Fisokuhle Ntuli, is being tried for the murder of Meyiwa, who was shot and killed in 2014 while visiting Khumalo at her mother’s home in Vosloorus.
The ongoing trial includes a trial-within-a-trial to consider the legitimacy of the confession statements made by Ntanzi and Sibiya.
The trial continues.
