A security guard from Ulundi in northern KwaZulu-Natal has been arrested for allegedly stealing R209,500 from a client.

The 33-year-old suspect was supposed to deposit the money after collecting it from a businessman in Ulundi last Thursday, but it was never deposited.

Hawks KZN spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo said that a team from the serious organised crime investigation unit from Richards Bay was called in to deal with the case.

Mhlongo said the suspect collected R209,500 on 11 April from a client in Ulundi but did not hand over the cash to the bank.

“The client enquired about the cash and an internal investigation was conducted,” said Mhlongo.

“The investigation revealed that a receipt book was tampered with and a case of theft was reported at Richards Bay police station.”

Mhlongo said the Hawks were alerted and the suspect was identified.

“During the search at the suspect’s residence, R26,000 was found. He was placed under arrest and charged accordingly. He is expected to appear in the Richards Bay Magistrate’s Court,” said Mhlongo.

This is not the first incident of its kind in the area.

In 2019, security guard Bathobile Mlangeni made headlines after she stole R4-million from her SBV Services employer in July 2019 and went missing for more than two years.
