Michael Schumacher’s family has been paid €200,000 (R4-million) from a magazine that published an artificial intelligence-generated “interview” with the former Formula 1 driver.
The German publication, Die Aktuelle, had a picture of Schumacher on its April 2023 cover, with a headline claiming “Michael Schumacher, the first interview” and a line that read “it sounded deceptively real”.
It was later revealed that the quotes in the article were generated by AI.
Schumacher, 55, has been out of the public eye since suffering severe head injuries in a skiing accident in December 2013.
A family spokesperson confirmed the judgment against Funke Media Group to Reuters. Funke Media is the publisher of the magazine.
Following the article’s publication, Die Aktuelle‘s editor was fired, and Funke Media issued an apology to Schumacher’s family.
After his skiing accident, Schumacher underwent an induced coma and was brought home in September 2014. His family has since kept details of his medical condition private.
Schumacher’s record of seven F1 wins, achieved during his time with Benetton and Ferrari, is jointly held with Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton.
