A group of stylish school boys at Mgezwa High School in Lusikisiki have landed themselves in serious trouble after jazzing up their drab school uniforms.
The five boys thought they could get away with touching up the uniform’s grey pants, shortening them to resemble skinny jeans that expose their naked ankles.
The boys say the snazzy look was helping the school keep up with modern trends but unfortunately for them the school principal doesn’t see it that way.
Principal Mzwandile Thutha suspended the learners for their fashionista antics, telling them not to show their faces at school until they’re wearing the correct uniform.
One of the suspended pupils said they wear the skinny trousers to boost their confidence and never thought trimming their trousers would get them into trouble.
They were told to bring in their parents or return to school wearing the regulation grey trousers.
Thembalakhe Zintonga was shocked by the school’s decision and said: “I didn’t see anything wrong with the kids; they were clean. The school needs to focus on more serious things than skinny trousers.”
Another parent allowed her son to trim his trousers because he was a laughing stock.
“He came back from school angry after some learners laughed at him for wearing big grey trousers, and asked to cut them and I agreed.
“The reason for cutting his trousers was enough for me, it never crossed my mind that I would be summoned to school or that I must buy him new trousers.” Unfortunately, she doesn’t have the money to buy him new trousers.
She will have to borrow money to buy them because her son’s education is essential. She doesn’t want him to be left behind in his studies just because of a fashion statement.
Eastern Cape Education spokesperson Malibongwe Mtima denied that the learners were suspended because they had tailored their uniform.
“They were sent home to change into different trousers from those they were wearing and come back wearing the school uniform’s colours.
“If the parent doesn’t have money to buy a uniform, they must come to school with their kids to explain to the school principal and governing body to avoid learners wearing different coloured clothes to school,” he said.
