- Government bosses and the social security agency in KwaZulu-Natal are taking back stolen grant money from corrupt state workers.
- The social security agency says government employees owe them more than R315 million after taking grants while earning monthly salaries.
Government workers in KwaZulu-Natal are illegally taking social grants while earning their monthly salaries.
Now, the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) and provincial government bosses are fighting back. They are teaming up to hunt down these public servants and take back the money.
Sassa says government workers in the province owe the agency more than R315 million.
In April last year, the agency started reviewing social grants. They wanted to stop fraud and make sure the payouts only go to people who actually qualify for them.
Thamo Mzobe is the Sassa regional executive manager in KwaZulu-Natal. She says the new partnership with government department heads will tackle this widespread theft.
Mzobe says the state will show zero tolerance for public servants who steal from the public purse.
“We are going to make sure that these monies are recouped from all the undeserving public servants that are stealing public money,” Mzobe said.
