Salah slots home to avoid Old Trafford defeat

Mohamed Salah and Liverpool left it late but claimed a point on an afternoon where they played into the hands of their bitter rivals Manchester United.

The Reds were dominant away from home, creating chances galore and keeping over 60% of the ball.

Jurgen Klopp’s men got their early breakthrough, too, with Luis Diaz netting midway through the first half.

It was adding to that advantage that the Reds would rue not doing, with just seven of their 29 shots finding the target — especially considering their hosts failed to register a single shot in the first 45.

After the break, though, the Red Devils were a different breed — scoring twice before the final quarter.

First, Bruno Fernandes caught Caoimhin Kelleher napping off his line and finished from range. Then Kobbie Mainoo struck an unstoppable rocket to put the hosts in front for the first time on the day.

Liverpool had ample opportunities to equalise, but the leveller would come from a late penalty, which prevented the Reds from falling behind on the points table in their title pursuit.

Still, the 2-2 draw would have been cheered on in both the blue half of Manchester and the red half of North London, with Arsenal now top of the standings on goal difference with seven games to play.

In the late games, Chelsea could only manage a 2-2 draw away at Sheffield United while Spurs beat Nottingham Forest 3-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
