A South African pilot has managed to fly a helicopter to safety after being shot in the shoulder when the aircraft came under fire in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Another soldier was fatally wounded in the attack on Thursday, which happened when the Oryx helicopter was flying over the city of Goma.

After being seriously wounded, the pilot – who has not been named – managed to land the helicopter safely in Goma Airport.

The spokesperson for the SA National Defence Force (SANDF), Siphiwe Dlamini, confirmed the incident and told News24: “The SANDF is in the process of informing family members of the soldiers involved in this unfortunate incident.”

Defence Minister Thandi Modise and the Chief of SANDF, General Rudzani Maphwanya, have offered their condolences to the family of the deceased soldier.
