SA Rugby to rethink Springbok ticket prices

  • Fans say Bok tickets cost too much, with Wales Test seats ranging from R507.50 to R1,857.50 and many still unsold.
  • SA Rugby says it must keep matches affordable while covering rugby’s costs and will review its pricing system for 2027.

SA Rugby says it will review Springbok ticket prices after supporters complained that watching the national team has become too expensive.

Fans have criticised the cost of Test tickets on social media.

High prices were also blamed for empty seats at Ellis Park during the Nations Championship match against England.

Organisers cut prices shortly before the game in an effort to bring more supporters into the stadium.

Tickets for the Springboks’ match against Wales in Durban start at R507.50. The most expensive seats cost R1,857.50, and many tickets are still available.

SA Rugby president Mark Alexander said the organisation had heard the complaints.

He said some ticket categories needed to be looked at carefully and changed.

“We take full ownership of this matter and are committed to ensuring that our ticketing structure reflects accessibility and sustainability,” Alexander said, The Citizen reported.

He said loyal supporters were central to the success of South African rugby.

Alexander said SA Rugby wanted ordinary people to feel included, but also had to make sure matches covered their costs.

“It is a delicate balance, but one we are determined to manage responsibly,” he said.

SA Rugby rejected claims that the high prices were caused by greed. Alexander said the organisation recorded a loss in 2025.

He said its commercial plans were meant to cover the cost of running rugby in South Africa, rather than create bigger profits.

SA Rugby also said Springbok matches brought money into local economies and helped promote South Africa internationally.

Alexander said rugby remained an important source of national pride.
