President Vladimir Putin has announced that Russia is close to developing cancer vaccines.
Speaking at a forum on future technologies in Moscow, Putin shared his excitement that these vaccines could soon be used on patients.
Details of the types of cancer these vaccines would target were not mentioned.
Various countries and companies are also working on the development of cancer vaccines. The UK has partnered with BioNTech to start clinical trials for personalised cancer treatments, with goals to involve 10,000 patients by 2030.
Pharmaceutical giant Moderna, as well as Merck & Co, are in the process of creating a cancer vaccine that has shown promise in reducing the risk of death from melanoma by 50% three years after diagnosis.
The World Health Organization recognizes six licensed vaccines against human papillomaviruses (HPV) responsible for numerous cancers, including cervical cancer, along with vaccines for hepatitis B (HBV), which is linked to liver cancer.
Russia’s work in vaccine development was previously showcased during the Covid-19 pandemic with the creation and distribution of the Sputnik V vaccine.
President Putin also shared that he had received the Sputnik vaccine, Reuters reported.
