Royal sources place chancellor Zondi in Durban hospital

  • Zondi’s spokesperson Wonderboy Jaca says the royal chancellor is healthy and working normally, but sources close to the palace contradict him directly.
  • The hospitalisation comes days after several newspapers reported extortion allegations linking Zondi to a R20-billion water supply tender south of Durban.

The Royal Chancellor of the Zulu Kingdom, Inkosi Malusi Zondi, is in hospital in Durban. His spokesperson says that is not true. Sources close to the royal household say it is.

Zondi was admitted last week, according to sources with knowledge of the matter. They would not say what he is being treated for. “He was admitted last week but it is something that is seriously kept as a secret,” one source said.

His spokesperson Wonderboy Jaca rejected the claim outright.

“Where did you get this information? He is not sick and he is healthy and continues with his daily work without any issues of health,” Jaca said.

The admission came days after several newspapers reported allegations that Zondi was involved in extortion linked to a R20-billion water supply tender in the south of Durban. Zondi denied those allegations. He called them false, misleading and damaging to his reputation, and warned he would take legal action against anyone who continued to make them.

It is not clear whether the extortion allegations went beyond newspaper reports or whether any formal complaint was made.
