Plymouth Argyle manager Wayne Rooney has started his new job ahead of the 12 July meeting with Orlando Pirates in Spain.
The Championship side regrouped for pre-season training on Wednesday under the Manchester United legend who has just joined them.
“Delighted to get started at Plymouth Argyle,” Rooney told the media.
“Great couple of days meeting all the staff, the lads and a few fans around Plymouth. Excited for what’s to come.”
The former England captain is now looking at beefing up his squad as they prepare to fight for promotion into the Premier League.
“I’m looking to bring players in but, ultimately, the message to the players is that everyone’s got a chance,” he added.
“It’s on them as players to prove to me they deserve to play, and that’s how I’ve always worked. Hard work is a very good skill to have.”
“If we do that, we’ll do very well. I feel I can improve the players. I think they can improve, whether that’s young players or some of the more senior players as well.”
“It’s a good opportunity for me to give them the information I want and hopefully I can see them improve,” Rooney concluded.
Rooney will first assess his players against the Buccaneers in what will be both sides’ first friendly match of pre-season.
The Soweto giants are expected to fly out to Spain on Monday and after facing Plymouth where they will come up against La Liga giants Sevilla.
They will conclude their tour with a friendly game against Qatari side Al Sadd on 19 July.
