At least 19 people lost their lives on South Africa’s busiest highways during the second weekend of December.
The deadliest of these crashes happened in the early hours of Sunday between Parys and Kroonstad on the N1 involving a truck and a minibus taxi.
Ten people, seven women and three male passengers in the minibus taxi died in the crash which happened between the small farming town of Koppies and Kroonstad.
Three other people including the truck driver and two male passengers in the minibus sustained serious injuries.
Also on the N1 in Limpopo, two people died in an accident involving two cars and a bus in Mookgophong.
On Friday night five people died on the N3 near Harrismith when a truck collided head-on with a car.
In another horrible crash on the N3 on Thursday night just before midnight, a truck driver and bus driver of a luxury intercity bus coach service died near the Market Road Interchange on the N3 outside Pietermaritzburg.
Traffic police said the truck rear-ended the luxury coach which on impact caught fire as its engine was in the back.
Both the truck driver and the bus driver died on the scene whilst more than 30 people, mostly bus passengers, were rushed to different hospitals in and around Pietermaritzburg.
