This week marked a full year since the death of Rikhado Makhado — also known as Boss Zonke and  Riky Rick — and fans and friends have been coming together to celebrate his legacy.

Riky Rick committed suicide on 23 February last year.

Newtown Junction played host to his commemoration this week  — fittingly, in front of his favourite hair salon, Legend’s Barber.

The event was organised by Cotton Fest, and the Junction’s courtyard was full of young people who were inspired by his life and his music.

The mini-vigil featured live performances by Moozlie, DJ Venom and Uncle Vinny, and appearances from the Boys In Bucks, as well as Stillo Maglide, Robot Boi and NastyC.

One of the attendees, Mlungisi Ndlovu, told Scrolla.Africa: “Rick was a huge inspiration in my life. I fell in love with making music and ‘Uswenko’ because of what he did for the culture.”

Fans and admirers took pictures and paid their respects in front of a picture of Riky.

The entire event ran from 3 pm – 5 pm, and Cappelo’s Newtown served for the after-party.

Newtown wasn’t the only place where his memory was being celebrated. Maboneng and Braamfontein digital billboards also lit up in red, with the message “We Never Die, We Multiply – in Living Memory Of Boss Zonke, 1987 – Infinity”.

The South African Hip-Hop community has not forgotten Riky Rick, and plans will continue to celebrate his memory.
