Ria Ledwaba takes the fight to Safa

Ria Ledwaba, the former vice-president of the South African Football Association (Safa), is set to challenge a ban placed on her by the association.

The ban, which prevents her from participating in all football activities under Safa’s control, was communicated through a letter from Safa’s CEO, Lydia Monyepao.

This action follows Ledwaba’s decision to legally challenge Safa regarding the presidential elections held in June 2022. She sought intervention to address the issues she raised, but Safa resisted these efforts.

The letter to Ledwaba, dated 6 March, described her as “persona non grata” within the organisation, basically disqualifying her from any football-related Safa activities.

Vernon Seymour, Ledwaba’s legal representative and a former Safa official himself, believes the battle is not over.

He claims that the ban should be lifted pending the appeal of her court case.

Seymour criticised the ban as an attempt to ruin Ledwaba’s reputation and silence her as a critic of Safa.

He highlighted her perfect record and dedication to South African football, stating that the action against her seemed to be a personal attack rather than a disciplinary measure.

The legal team is prepared to challenge the ban in court if Safa does not retract its decision.
