The Cape of Good Hope SPCA is offering a R5,000 reward for information that could lead to the arrest of the people who killed three pit bulls in Gatesville Athlone, Cape Town.
After three dogs mauled a 15-month-old girl to death last week, angry residents chased down two of the dogs and stoned them and burnt the dogs to death.
The third dog was caught minutes later and also killed.
In a statement the SPCA said the investigation is in terms of the Animals Protection Act.
According to the SPCA the act indicates that any person who ill-treats an animal, including kicking, torture or cruelly beating an animal is guilty of an offence and could be fined R40,000 or jailed for 12 months.
TimesLive reports that The City Of Cape Town’s mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith said the aim of the investigation is to make sure such cruelty to animals does not happen again.
Chief Inspector Jaco Pieterse said last week that dog owners who wish to give their pit bulls to the SPCA should contact the Inspectorate on 021 700 4158/9 or after hours on 083 326 1604.
“Community members are also urged to report cruelty to animals to the same numbers,” Pieterse said.
Pit bulls have killed four kids in the last nine days.
On Sunday, the body of Zimkhitha Gaga, 37, was found on the side of the road in Port Alfred after she was mauled by dogs.
