Relebogile Mabotja’s tenure as host of the Weekday Show on Talk Radio 702 began on Monday, marking the end of an era as legendary host Azania Mosaka retired from radio.
The announcements cap off an eventful week in South African radio, with major shake ups getting underway in five of the nation’s regional commercial stations. Robert Marawa took over as the anchor of Marawa Sports Worldwide (MSW) on Monday.
Meanwhile Mabotja is making a long-awaited return to Talk Radio 702, with her previous stint taking place from 2017 to 2019.
Mabotja’s predecessor Mosaka bid farewell to her loyal listeners last week, marking the end of an illustrious 20-year career. Her last show on talk radio 702 aired on Friday, and her emotional farewell brought many of her legions of fans to tears.
According to the statement issued by 702, the broadcaster announced her resignation on 16 November to focus on her NPO Peo Impact Gardens in Soweto.
“As they say, all good things must come to an end. After twenty years of radio, I am stepping away from the microphone,” she said.
702 station manager Mzo Jojwana said Mosaka will be missed as she contributed significantly to 702’s success over the last six years.
“We are thrilled to welcome Relebogile Mabotja back to the station. We know her voice, fearlessness, and ability to listen and really connect with our listeners will once again hit the right note with our audience,” he said.
Meanwhile, seasoned sports anchor Marawa was beginning his tenure as host of Marawa Sports Worldwide (MSW), a simulcast broadcast on two commercial regional stations: Vuma FM in KZN and Rise FM in Mpumalanga.
The concept of a dual-broadcast is not new to the award-winning Marawa. When he returned to SABC, MSW simulcasted on Metro FM and Radio 2000.
The nature of his departure from that show drew national headlines, as he was fired from his role in July via a text message.
Meanwhile, Unathi Nkayi has been fired by Kaya FM for misconduct. Andy Maqondwana would be standing in while an announcement for Nkayi’s replacement would be made.
