Liverpool have now lost as many Premier League games this season as they did in the entirety of last season.
After a start filled with late goals and thrilling moments, Arne Slot’s side have now become the first team in English top-flight history to win their opening five games of a season and then lose their next four.
The latest of those being Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at Brentford.
While Mohamed Salah found his scoring boots again, something seemed off for the Reds — and Slot is still searching for the answer.
“Teams seem have a certain playing style against us, which is a very good strategy to play, and we haven’t found an answer yet,” he said post-match.
“It definitely also has to do with if you change quite a lot during the summer, then I think it’s not a surprise that it can go a bit like this. But I didn’t expect it to go with four losses in a row, let that be clear.”
Liverpool have little time to spend looking at the drawing board, with the games coming thick and fast. Crystal Palace in the cup on Wednesday will be followed by Aston Villa in the league and then the return of Trent Alexander Arnold and Real Madrid to Anfield in the Champions League a week on Tuesday.
In some of the weekend’s other results, Manchester City also tasted defeat as Aston Villa picked up a 1-0 win over them, while Arsenal claimed their fifth win in a row in all competitions without conceding a single goal. Mikel Arteta’s side were 1-0 winners over Palace and remain at the top of the table.
