Mohamed Salah was the star upon his return to the Liverpool squad as the Reds beat Brentford away from home for the first time in over eight decades.
Before and after a cheeky Darwin Nunez chip to make it 1-0, Diogo Jota and Curtis Jones had to be substituted due to “worrying” injury blows.
At the half, Nunez would have to be substituted too, with Jurgen Klopp saying post-match that the extent of the injuries were yet to be determined.
The return of the Egyptian king came earlier than many would have anticipated, with Salah coming on in the final minutes of the first half to make his first Premier League appearance since New Year’s day.
Even without three key men, the Reds marched on in the second period, with Salah scoring one and assisting another before Cody Gakpo put the icing on the cake of a 4-1 win.
The victory marked the end of a winless league run that dates back to 1938 for Liverpool away at Brentford, and sends Klopp’s men five points clear at the top of the table.
“What the boys did after 15, 20 minutes was exceptional against a team who are set up to annoy you,” Klopp told reporters after the game.
“We played a good game from a specific moment on. We controlled them as much as you can and we are happy about that.”
Dwelling on the injuries, the Reds boss said that only time would tell how much the absences would cost them.
“We have to see how much it costs us. We don’t know yet. Curtis Jones got a knock above his ankle. The fact Curtis could not play on tells you something because he would have played on at all costs.”
“Diogo Jota looks the worst. I didn’t see it back but I heard the pictures didn’t look great. We have to see there. Darwin Nunez we took off because he said he felt something very little.”
Liverpool face a trip to Wembley for the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea a week on Sunday but will first host Luton Town in a midweek Premier League clash on Wednesday.
