Extra Time: For years, Mzansi’s footballing giants have told their fans they are “rebuilding”. Enough is enough, writes Menzi Magubane, it is time to win.
For every major football league in the world there are at least a handful of clubs whose fans not only expect, but demand that their team delivers trophies.
As a coach, if you don’t give the supporters what they paid for to fill stadiums, then you are in trouble.
In recent years, clubs have increasingly used the excuse that coaches need “time to rebuild”. Sometimes, that is a valid reason, but too often it is used as a lame excuse when they fail to win.
Supporters know when their clubs and countries have all the resources the coach needs to reinforce and succeed.
When it comes to smaller teams, they may genuinely need to be patient to find success but it is not the case when it comes to big teams like Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs. They have all resources available to achieve immediate success.
Coach Farouk Khan said you can’t “rebuild” a big club.
“Big clubs strengthen, big clubs reinforce and you can’t rebuild an institution. You can’t rebuild Chiefs or Pirates, you reinforce them. Barcelona is not rebuilding, they are reinforcing,” said Khan.
Others may disagree with Khan but truth be told, he is right. Let us be realistic. Teams like Chiefs and Pirates are the powerhouses of Mzansi football, and anything less than dominance is failure.
Mamelodi Sundowns are where they are right now because they invest in both quality players and coaches who can hit the ground running.
Unfortunately the same can’t be said for Chiefs and Pirates. Recent years and results speak for themselves. They haven’t won a league title for over five years and they say they are rebuilding! Seriously?
