This is not a drill: Royal Challengers Bangalore have finally won the cup.
After 16 years without a trophy for the franchise, it was the women of RCB that would bring home the first title as Smriti Mandhana’s troops brought home the gold against the Delhi Capitals on Sunday.
The Women’s Premier League (WPL) final featured table topping favourites Delhi having a bat first and getting off to a flying start on home soil.
At 64/0 after seven overs, the eventual result seemed far from a possibility.
Shefali Verna top scored for Delhi, striking 44 off just 27 balls at the top of the order. The mentality of the visitors saw them pull through until the very last delivery, though.
This time, Shreyanka Patil (4/12) and Sophie Molineux (3/20) would find the breakthroughs as the Capitals were quickly bowled out for 113.
In response, Ellyse Perry would be at the crease until the very last ball — hitting 35 off 37 to celebrate one of the great achievements for the Bangalore faithful.
The eight wicket win concluded the women’s edition of the competition.
All eyes will now fall on Faf du Plessis, Virat Kohli and company as the men’s IPL takes centre stage for an opener of Bangalore up against Chennai on Friday.
