President Cyril Ramaphosa gave a televised address to the nation on Tuesday night to announce a return to lockdown Level 3 amid rapidly rising cases of Covd-19.
“We have to act decisively and move quickly to save lives,” Ramaphosa said.
Changes to the current restrictions are as follows:
- Stores selling alcohol for consumption at home will only be allowed to do so between Monday and Thursday.
- The curfew will now start at 10pm, meaning nonessential establishments such as bars, restaurants and taverns will have to close at 9pm to allow patrons and workers to get home in time.
- The number of people allowed to gather indoors has been reduced to 50, and the number of people allowed to gather outdoors is now 100.
Ramaphosa said that Gauteng accounts for two-thirds of all infections and will overtake the peak of the second wave “in a matter of days.
“We are facing a grave emergency but if we act together and act now we will overcome it.”
