The Proteas took a lead of 124 runs with three wickets in hand after a full day’s cricket against England at Lord’s today.
After ending a rainy day one on 116/6, England were dismissed for 165 with Kagiso Rabada taking three wickets this morning to claim a five wicket haul at the home of cricket, including the big scalp of Ollie Pope for 73 off 102 deliveries.
South Africa responded to England’s low total with some fantastic batting up top, hitting 85 for the loss of the first wicket.
Sarel Erwee went on to score 73 off 146 before England captain Ben Stokes began to make some inroads with the ball. The 31-year-old finished on 3/53, taking out Erwee, Rassie van der Dussen and Keshav Maharaj.
Marco Jansen was not out on 41 at the end of the day; and despite losing his wicket, Maharaj put up 41 as well to help stabilise the South African innings.
Stuart Broad and Jimmy Anderson managed just a wicket apiece but will hope to get the job done early on day three to give the English batters a chance in the second innings.
Play will commence at 11:00 UK time with South Africa 289/7, leading by 124. Overcast conditions are forecast for Friday with a fair chance of rain as the day progresses.
