Customs officers at OR Tambo in Johannesburg intercepted a shipment of crystal meth worth R236 million heading for Australia.
The shipment of drugs was being held in an item that had been declared as a “multipurpose anti-slip mat”, according to a statement released by SAPS on Sunday.
Upon a physical inspection of the “mat”, officers discovered 785kg of crystal meth.
“I want to send a clear warning to the criminal syndicates that are using our ports of entry/exit to commit this type of crime, that our officers are alert and working very hard to stamp out such criminality,” said SARS commissioner Edward Kieswetter.
The giant haul came just days after Australian police seized a record R18.6 billion rand of crystal meth concealed inside marble stones being transported in freight ships.
Police in Sydney uncovered a total of 1,800kg of methylamphetamine at Sydney Port on Friday.
