- Dorljota taxi association brings back cheap scholar transport to ease pressure on parents.
- Fare cut from up to R22 down to R10 for learners in surrounding areas.
The Dorljota taxi association in Roodepoort is cutting its fares for high school learners to just R10 — nearly half of what they used to pay.
The fare reduction, which kicks in on 1 April, is a big relief for many families who’ve been struggling to keep up with expensive scholar transport. Until now, learners were paying between R16 and R22, depending on where they live.
The initiative was stopped during Covid-19 but now the taxi association is bringing it back to help learners and their parents.
“We want to make transport safer and more affordable,” said association spokesperson Itumeleng Chambata.
Chambata said many parents are worried about their children’s safety and the cost of private scholar transport.
“We’ve heard stories of drivers dating minors and even giving them alcohol. Others complain their kids get home too late.”
He added that children are often squashed into overcrowded taxis. “A nine-seater ends up carrying 16 learners,” he said.
The association has been working with schools and governing bodies to make the plan work.
Princess High School administrator Kgomotso Mosimege welcomed the move. “This will really help struggling parents,” she said.
But she made it clear that no one will be forced to leave their current transport service. “Private transport options will still be available.”
Dorljota members visited Princess High to speak to learners about issues like skipping classes, coming late to school and the financial challenges parents face.
The R10 fare only applies to areas where Dorljota taxis operate, including Slovoville, Dobsonville, Bramsficherville, Tshepisong, Snakepark and Flyhof.
