The quest to claim the Premier Soccer League’s top goal-scorer award is heating up, with Orlando Pirates forward Tshegofatso Mabasa leading the race.

Mabasa grabbed a brace in the 2-0 victory over Chippa United on Wednesday to go top of the chart with 15 goals.

His double was a response to the recent five goals struck by Iqraam Rayners in Stellenbosch’s 5-0 win over Polokwane City.

Their exploits have made the Golden Boot race an interesting contest, but Mabasa plays down the quest to end the term as the highest scorer.

“It’s not really on my mind,” Mabasa told the media.

“The important thing is for the team to get three points. If it happens [winning the Golden Boot], it’s by the grace of God, and I’ll be thankful for that.

“Obviously, it will mean a lot. As a striker, that’s what you look to do; you look to score goals, and if they’re coming the way they are right now, I’m very glad and happy.”

Interestingly, Mabasa has become a trusted Pirates marksman after starting the season away on loan at Moroka Swallows.

Rayners is just a goal behind Mabasa with 14 goals, while Mamelodi Sundowns attacker Lucas Ribeiro Costa is third on the chart, having found the back of the net 12 times.

However, Ribeiro could be out of the race as he faces an uncertain period on the sidelines with an injury.

SuperSport forward Bradley Grobler and Cape Town City’s Khanyisa Mayo have 10 goals each, sitting just behind Ribeiro.
