South Africa pulled off a strong comeback to defeat India by four wickets in the second ODI in Raipur on Wednesday, leveling the series 1-1.
Aiden Markram’s 110 off 98 balls laid the foundation for a chase of 359, with Matthew Breetzke (68) and Dewald Brevis (54) adding crucial half-centuries.
Brevis’ explosive innings included five sixes, propelling the visitors towards the target.
Despite early setbacks, including Quinton de Kock’s dismissal, South Africa’s middle order held firm.
Captain Temba Bavuma (46) helped add 101 for the second wicket alongside Markram to set-up the chase.
Corbin Bosch finished the game with an unbeaten 29 off 15 balls, guiding South Africa to victory with four balls remaining.
India’s hopes were high after posting 358-5, thanks to Ruturaj Gaikwad’s maiden ODI century (105) and Virat Kohli’s 53rd ton (102).
Despite losing their 20th ODI toss on the spin, the hosts were strong for the majority of their first innings.
Their inability to get a perfect start with the ball — the way they did on Sunday — is what cost them, as the Proteas ensured the series will go the distance with all to play for in Vishakhapatnam on Saturday.
