The City of Johannesburg is hosting the fourth edition of the SPAR International Netball Test Series. The series kicks off on Thursday, 29 January and runs until Sunday, 1 February.
The matches will take place at the Ellis Park Indoor Arena.
This is the Proteas’ first international action of the year. The series forms part of South Africa’s preparation for the Commonwealth Games, which will take place in Glasgow later in the year.
The last time the Proteas faced England on home soil was during the 2023 Netball World Cup held in Cape Town.
The City of Johannesburg said hosting the international series reinforces its position as a preferred destination for major sporting events. The tournament also places the spotlight on women’s sport.
It aims to encourage greater participation by young girls in sport.
The City’s Department of Community Development plays a key role in promoting women’s sport. The department supports development programmes and provides access to sporting facilities across Johannesburg.
MMC for Community Development Thapelo Amad said the City was ready to welcome the visiting team. He said Johannesburg will continue investing in sports development.
Amad said the City will ensure athletes have access to world-class venues.
South Africa and England are currently ranked fifth and fourth in the world respectively. This sets the stage for a highly competitive series.
Netball fans are expected to turn out in large numbers to support the Proteas as they take on one of the world’s top teams.
