Prosecutor shot dead in front of partner and child

  • Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi says court officials are under attack, and current safety measures for prosecutors are not good enough.
  • The shooting comes just two months after another prosecutor was killed in Mthatha.

Regional court prosecutor Tracy Brown has been shot and killed outside her home in Young Park, Gqeberha.

She had just arrived in her Toyota Etios at about 3.30pm on Thursday when four masked men jumped out of a white Volkswagen Polo and opened fire on her car.

Her partner and young child were with her when it happened. Brown died on the way to hospital.

Police have not said if the attack was linked to any of her court cases.

Two months ago, another prosecutor was shot dead in Mthatha.

Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi said she was deeply disturbed by the trend of prosecutors being targeted.

She admitted that although there are safety measures in place for court officials, there are serious gaps.

“These protections must be reinforced and better coordinated with other security cluster stakeholders to ensure that our prosecutors can carry out their duties without fear for their lives,” said Kubayi.

The National Prosecuting Authority called the attack a blow to the justice system.

Spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga said the National Prosecuting Authority and police will work together to catch the killers.

Police have asked anyone with information to contact investigating officer Warrant Officer Errol Kleinhans on 083 243 4567, Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or via the MySAPS app.
