Joy4Joy Boxing Promotions bosses have been hauled over the coals by Boxing South Africa (BSA) following their failure to stage a tournament in Durban.

The company had scheduled a tournament at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban last week Sunday, where the World Boxing Federation (WBF), the World Boxing Organisation and International Boxing Organisation vacant titles were on the line.

However, the tournament ran into serious delays and the date was changed to Tuesday this week.

Then the date was changed for the second time and the tournament was rescheduled for Thursday, before being cancelled entirely.

The tournament saw the number of intended bouts being cut in half after the promoters failed to meet overseas boxers’ financial obligations. In addition, the company faced further sanctions over the non-payment of a sanctioning fee to the WBF.

The tournament has already stirred up controversy over its unpermitted use of images of Floyd Mayweather and King Misuzulu Zulu on posters, resulting in legal action being taken by both men.

BSA boss Erick Sithole said: “We will summon the Joy4Joy Promotions bosses to come appear before our legal officer.”

Sithole revealed that the company was already under investigation by BSA before the ill-fated tournament.

“We had already started an investigation even before the tournament was cancelled. We will determine the extent of the damage and then decide if we institute disciplinary proceedings against them or not.”

It has since emerged that one of the reasons the tournament could not go ahead was because certain obligations were not met.

When approached for comment, Joy4Joy’s CEO Squire Ndamase and promoter Jacob Mnisi said they will issue a statement soon.
