Phinderia Botshelo Phora was one of thousands of new police recruits who attended a graduation ceremony in Pretoria West last month to celebrate the bright future ahead of her.
The 31-year-old was stationed at Dennilton Police Station and was ready to make South Africa a safer place after graduating from the police programme.
But she was tragically killed on New Year’s Day, allegedly by her jealous husband, who had often accused her of having an affair.
The husband, a prison warden, appeared at the Mamelodi Magistrate’s Court on Thursday to face a murder charge.
Phora’s lifeless body was found in a back room of the home the couple were renting in Phase 5 of Mamelodi East in Tshwane on 2 January.
It is alleged that she was strangled to death with a cable on the day before she was found.
A neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, said her body was found by members of the family, while her husband went missing.
The neighbour said the husband was later found and had admitted to a hospital that he had attempted suicide by consuming poison.
“The husband had accused her of cheating since she became a police officer. She once called us to try to make peace between them as they were fighting constantly,” she said.
After the man appeared briefly at the magistrate’s court in Mamelodi, the matter was postponed to 11 January for him to get a legal representative, as he had declined the services of a state-funded lawyer.
